What is Vermiculite: Health Risks Explained
Vermiculite is a naturally-occurring mineral composed of shiny flakes that look like mica. When expanded (by heating), vermiculite becomes a light-weight, fire-resistant and odorless material with superior insulation capabilities. It has been used in numerous products, including insulation for attics and walls.
Cross contamination with asbestos in the Libby Mines, Montana (which was a major source of vermiculite) raised Health Canada and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) concerns about its health risks. Since sustained contact with asbestos has resulted in many cases of lung cancer, Mesothelioma (cancer of the lining of the chest or abdominal cavity) or Asbestosis (scarring of the thin membranes lining the lung and chest), both agencies have issued warnings about prolonged exposure to contaminated vermiculite.
Vermiculite insulation in buildings that are more than 20 years very likely contains asbestos. It should be tested and removed by trained professionals to eliminate associated health risks.
